This panoramic
photograph features a beautiful twilight image of downtown
Montréal as seen looking across the St. Lawrence River. Montréal
is located on an island at the junction of the Ottawa and St.
Lawrence Rivers and is the economic and cultural heart of the
largely French-speaking province of Québec. The tallest
building, with its triangular-shaped roof, is 1000 rue de la
Gauchetière. The area along the river is known as Old Montréal
and retains its historic character with the largest
concentration of 17th, 18th and 19th Century buildings in North
America. In the distance is Mount Royal (originally French Mont
Réal), the hill after which the city is named.
